Summary The Crypto Done Right project was started by Dr. Seth Nielson thanks to a generous grant from Cisco to Johns Hopkins while he led advanced research projects there. The purpose is to establish a knowledge base of actionable cryptography facts and guides to help managers, IT staff, and developers to choose cryptography that is appropriate for their use-case. Summary libjpeg-turbo is a JPEG image codec that uses SIMD instructions (MMX, SSE2, AVX2, Neon, AltiVec) to accelerate baseline JPEG compression and decompression on x86, x86-64, Arm, and PowerPC systems, as well as progressive JPEG compression on x86, x86-64, and Arm systems. On such systems, libjpeg-turbo is generally 2-6x as fast as libjpeg, all else being equal. On other types of systems, libjpeg-turbo can still outperform libjpeg by a significant amount, by virtue of its highly-optimized Huffman coding routines. In many cases, the performance of libjpeg-turbo rivals that of proprietary high-speed JPEG codecs. libjpeg-turbo implements both the traditional libjpeg API as well as the less powerful but more straightforward TurboJPEG API. libjpeg-turbo also features colorspace extensions that allow it to compress from/decompress to 32-bit and big-endian pixel buffers (RGBX, XBGR, etc.), as well as a full-featured Java interface. libjpeg-turbo was originally based on libjpeg/SIMD, an MMX-accelerated derivative of libjpeg v6b developed by Miyasaka Masaru. The TigerVNC and VirtualGL projects made numerous enhancements to the codec in 2009, and in early 2010, libjpeg-turbo spun off into an independent project, with the goal of making high-speed JPEG compression/decompression technology available to a broader range of users and developers. libjpeg-turbo is an ISO/IEC and ITU-T reference implementation of the JPEG standard.

LibJpeg-Turbo

Summary TurboVNC is a derivative of VNC (Virtual Network Computing) that is tuned to provide peak performance for 3D and video workloads. TurboVNC was originally a fork of TightVNC 1.3.x, and on the surface, the X server and Windows viewer still behave similarly to their parents. However, the current version of TurboVNC contains a much more modern X server code base (based on X.org 7.7) and a variety of other features and fixes not present in TightVNC, including a high-performance Java viewer. In addition, TurboVNC compresses 3D and video workloads significantly better than the “tightest” compression mode in TightVNC 1.3.x while using only typically 15-20% of the CPU time of the latter. Using non-default settings, TurboVNC can also match the best compression ratios produced by TightVNC 1.3.x for 2D workloads. Summary in the early 2000's, thin client computing was a marketing buzzword something that excited the people in the main office but something that organizations didn't really know how to leverage effectively. Today, it stands poised to be the next sea change in the IT industry, driven in no small part by the advent of mobile devices and cloud-based services. For applications that demand a great deal of system resources and deal with very large amounts of data, the ability to run those applications remotely from the cold room has been a desirable even necessary feature for quite some time. Even for less heavy-hitting applications, thin client computing allows large organizations to significantly reduce their IT expenditures by way of a less complex administration model, improved security, and reduced hardware costs.
